“If you wear the mantle of leadership, people need to KNOW that you care.”
In To Lead Is to Care, John O. Burdett reflects on the overwhelming pace that artificial intelligence (AI) is advancing and why the #1 skill leaders are rightly adopting is AI fluency. Central to that learning agenda is knowing when AI is the solution … and when the claims supporting AI are either hyperbole or marginalise what it means to be a leader.
Artificial general intelligence (AGI) may eventually positively shape complex aspects of leadership. Yet even in that scenario there are leadership domains that will remain essentially human. Central to the challenge is this: to lead is to care.
The greater the pool of knowledge that rests with those who inhabit the lower echelons of the organization – the greater the need for caring. The bigger the scale of technological change being embarked on – the greater the need for caring. The more intense the degree of anxiety and concern over the future in the workplace – the greater the need for caring. The greater the risk, uncertainly and ambiguity – the greater the need for caring.
To lead is to care.
