Coming to Terms with Skill Based Hiring

by John O. Burdett

While essential, focusing solely on skills in hiring can be an oversimplification. Imagine building a Premier League football team — skills are critical, but without discipline, teamwork, and a commitment to growth, talent alone won’t guarantee success. The same principle applies in business: core skills matter, but they shouldn’t overshadow broader leadership qualities like adaptability, emotional intelligence, and strategic foresight.

An overreliance on specific skills, without attention to deeper competencies, can lead to stagnation. For senior roles especially, recruitment must be forward-looking, aligning with future organisational needs rather than replicating the present. Ultimately, a skill is more than a visible trait — it reflects deeper capabilities, values, and the potential for growth. Achieving the right balance is key to long-term success.
